Dr Owen Horwood

Dr Horwood holds a doctorate from Oxford University, in addition to two specialist masters degrees, the first in Environmental Change and Management and the second in Water Science, Policy and Management. He holds a third masters degree in Chemistry from the University of the Witwatersrand. Amongst various accolades, he is the recipient of the Merck Gold Medal for Interdisciplinary Excellence as well as the South African Association for the Advancement of Science Medal.

His career has enabled him to engage with a wide range of sustainability stakeholders, both locally and internationally. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) awarded him a visiting fellowship at the Heidelberg University Centre for the Environment and he has lectured at the invitation of two prominent UN University Institutes (UNU-IAS & UNU-FLORES).

He currently serves on the External Advisory Panel for National Environmental Management Act Appeals to the Gauteng Provincial Government, having previously been a sub-committee chair of the Research Advisory Panel for Natural Resource Management Programmes, South African National Biodiversity Institute.

Dr Horwood is a member of the Institute of Directors SA and has served as a Non-Executive Director on the Board of Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo since the 16thMarch 2017.
