The Joburg Zoo brings young and old together to celebrate World Animal Day with exciting animal demonstrations and exhibitions.

JOHANNESBURG City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) is celebrating World Animal Day on 4 October 2013 by hosting 120 senior citizens and 240 pre-school learners for a day of zoological excitement at the Joburg Zoo.

Vukazenzele Oldies Club senior citizens will enjoy a ferry tour of the Zoo, while the pre-schoolers, from Diepsloot Pre-Primary, will participate in an educational craft session about the Big Five.

The group will also be treated to reptile and owl demonstrations aiming to demystify the species, and grow awareness on the roles animals play in our lives.

Held annually on 4 October, World Animal Day is a global movement that celebrates animal life in all its forms. It aims to create a culture of respect and sensitivity for all animals.

Established in 1931 at an ecologists’ convention in Florence, Italy, to highlight the plight of endangered species, World Animal Day has since evolved to become a day for remembering and paying tribute to all animals and the people who love and respect them.

The convention chose the Christian feast day of the saint Francis of Assisi - the religion’s patron saint of animals - as World Animal Day.
