It took 300 Joburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) workers - with the help of a power lunch sponsored by Steers - just six hours to transform Rotunda Park, Turffontein during JCPZ's latest ExtremePark Makeover.

With the foundations and structures laid in advance, the workers moved in on Thursday morning for an intensive session of landscaping, painting and installing of new playground equipment and outdoor furniture at the historic park, one of Joburg's oldest.

By the time Executive Mayor Parks Tau arrived at 3pm, Rotunda XtremePark was ready for the handover ceremony - complete with new picnic and braai facilities, a state-of-art children's play area, skateboard court, astroturf mini-soccer field and more.

It wouldn't have been possible, though, if JCPZ's work team hadn't had the right fuel at lunchtime, which came courtesy of sponsor Steers in the form of a flame-grilled burger, pack of hot handmade chips and choice of 500ml cool drink for each worker.

Steers founder George Halamandaris introduced the first steakhouse concept to South Africa, with his son, John Halamandaris, opening the first Steers store in Jeppe in 1970.

The franchise has a rich history of growing together with Joburg's various communities, and believes that by supporting JCPZ in maintaining and developing old and new outdoor spaces for the city's residents, it is investing in continued future growth for all.
