Join the festive fun at Joburg Zoo this December as we spoil our animals with love, toys and attention as part of the Zoo's behaviour enrichment programme.

Join us as we spoil our animals this festive season

Most animals like to explore and play as part of their learning process. Animals in their natural environment get to experience the exhilaration of the hunt - as well as the stress of being hunted, or of suffering from hunger, illness or injury.

In zoos, a number of these experiences are eliminated. To compensate for this, Joburg Zoo stimulates its animals by adding behaviour enrichment equipment to their enclosures.

These include swings, hammocks, feeder balls, frozen food, ladders, climbing frames, scent trails, hidden food treats and different textures like leaves.

Members of the public are invited to pack a picnic basket and visit the Zoo on any weekend in December to witness our special Christmas present enrichment programme, which is scheduled to run as follows:

  • Elephants: 13 December
  • Spectacle bears: 14 December
  • Chimps: 21 December
  • Lion cubs: 27 December
