THE Johannesburg Zoo is appealing to residents that are doing any plant pruning to please keep the zoo animals in mind.

Many of the zoo residents enjoy leafy materials throughout the year and zoo keepers struggle in winter to provide foliage for enrichment. Animals that we try and provide branches to are the Giraffe, Eland, Bongo, Nyala and Elephants; this is in addition to their normal diets thus adding some variety. Many of the other zoo residents enjoy the browse as a source of enrichment, so we can never have too much!

Please, let us know if you have to remove any indigenous trees, especially Rhus (karee) trees, wild olive or Acacia species or are planning some routine maintenance.

Contact our Senior Nutritionist on 011 646 2000 ext 235 or our Herbivores Keepers on ext 241. Should you not get hold of them, please leave a message with reception so they can return your call.
