oafconopeneing sideThe Afcon 2013 opening ceremony promises to be a vibrant ceremonyTHE artists and the AFCON local organizing committee (LOC) chief executive officer Mvuzo Mbebe promised Joburgers and the rest of the world that the opening ceremony will become “an African celebration.” The unveiling of the entertainment line-up followed on the heels of the Executive Mayor of the City of Joburg Mpho Parks Tau and his Mayoral team’s tour of the stadium, park and ride facilities and public viewing areas, giving it a thumbs-up.
“We promised that this is going to be a celebration of Africa. Only African artists will perform at the opening ceremony. All the tickets of the opening match have been sold-out. You are going to see all four corners of Africa converge at the opening ceremony,” said Mbebe.
The line-up includes South African vocalists Judith Sephuma, Lira, Siphokazi and Ayanda Nhlangothi, Mali’s Oumou Sangare, Kenya’s Eric Wainana, South African legendary artists Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse, Sibongile Khumalo and Ringo Madlingozi among others.
The vibrant opening ceremony, themed “Celebrate Africa – The Beat at Africa’s Feet!” commences at 16h00 on Saturday, 19 January.
“Producing an opening ceremony for Africa’s largest soccer spectacular is nothing short of a thrill,” enthuses Hlubi Kwebulana, VWV event producer.
It took at least 300 hours of practice for the performers and choreographers fine-turning every little detail regarding the grand-opening.
Ringo’s excitement about performing right before the tournament’s kick-off is palpable: “Like any self-respecting African, I’m a real soccer enthusiast, so being part of the Orange Africa Cup of Nations SOUTH AFRICA 2013 Opening Ceremony is a huge honour!” he exclaims. “The creative treatment on this ceremony is fantastic, a beautiful representation of our continent’s many faces. I can’t wait for everyone to finally watch everything we’ve been working so hard on – they’ll be amazed!”
Award-winning artist Lira says: “The year has only started, and already I’m having such an incredible time. This is my favourite kind of celebration, collaborating with an A-list roster of artists from around the continent, and being a part of Africa’s most prestigious soccer tournament!  Watch out everyone – Saturday, 19th of Jan is going to ROCK!”
The Opening Ceremony precedes the match between Bafana Bafana vs Cape Verde Match at the National Stadium.
