Focus on food waste

In South Africa, the Groen Sebenza Jobs Fund will be launched to mark World Environment Day. Internationally, the day is focusing on food waste, with the theme "Think.Eat.Save".

SCORES of activities have been lined up around South Africa to celebrate World Environment Day, an annual event celebrated throughout the world on 5 June to promote awareness of the importance of preserving and enhancing biodiversity.

If you are in Joburg on the day, or indeed this weekend, spend a little time in nature as your contribution to the celebrations. There are plenty of parks to pick, from the Emmarentia Botanical Gardens to Thokoza Park, or simply take a long walk through Delta Park admiring the bird life. Then, of course, there is always time to visit the Johannesburg Zoo.

This year, World Environment Day is being celebrated at a global level in Mongolia, and the theme is "Think.Eat.Save". Think.Eat.Save. is a campaign highlighting food waste and food loss to encourage people to reduce food wastage.

According to South Africa's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, more than nine million tons of food is wasted each year in the republic. One reason for this is that many people don't understand how to store food properly.

To mark the day, the minister of water and environmental affairs, Edna Molewa, will launch the Groen Sebenza Jobs Fund project, spearheaded by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (Sanbi), at the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens on 8 June.

This project will involve the placement of 800 unemployed people in skilled jobs in public and private institutions in the local biodiversity sector for a period of two-and-a-half years. It will focus on training, mentoring and experiential learning with the objective of building a pool of young and capable professionals for South Africa's biodiversity sector.
