Government’s initiative is to plant indigenous trees, and it is supported by adopting this policy of planting indigenous trees.
-
Select and determine indigenous tree species that can survive and grow in the area to be planted e.g. frost tolerant etc.
-
Plant tree species best suited for the width of the sidewalk.
-
After applying for a wayleave, plant the trees as indicated by the distance given by J.R.A.
-
Determine the location of underground and overhead services and select the correct planting distance to suit the tree species available.
-
Do not plant closer than 1 metre to any roadside kerb or closer than 1,3 metres to any property boundary line.
-
Select trees with broad crowns for wider sidewalks so as to prevent excessive road over encroachment.
-
Do not plant closer than 10 metres to a road intersection, 5 metres from an electrical pole, vehicle entrance, road sign or storm water culverts. The planting space between trees must be determined by the street layout and the trees should be between 10 and 15 metres apart.
-
On streets with electrical street light poles, plant 3 metres between the poles at evenly spaced intervals.
-
Preferably plant the same selected tree species in the whole street for the sake of uniformity.
PLANTING PREPARATION
- Trees must be 3 metres or more in height.
-
Trees must be stand alone.
-
No tree stakes.
-
Have a stem diameter of ± 50mm or more.
-
Trees must be in a container of 50 lts or more, to 100 lts.
-
Ex-open ground trees must have been grown in a container for a year or more (root development).
-
Consider placing the trees in the middle of the pavement and not in pedestrian walkway.
-
Dig a hole 2x the size of the container and twice its size in depth.
-
Backfill the hole with soft soil and compost to the correct level for the soil of the container to be level with the natural soil.
-
Mix 60g super phosphate in base soil.
-
Mix 60g super phosphate in heap of soil.
-
Remove tree from container, hand place in hole and correct loose heap of soil around the new tree and compact slightly.
-
Create a soil dam around the base of the tree and water the tree well.
-
Fill hole with water and allow to soak away, then refill the dam with as much water as possible.
-
Water well once a week until the tree is well established.
