Golden-headed bulging-eyed dragons, full of fire and fury, plough through the otherwise tranquil waters of Wemmer Pan. It´s a furious fight to the finish. Individual watchers hold their breath in excitement, communities take bets, point at the boats on the water... the annual Chinese dragon boat race is not to be missed.

At the first ever annual box cart race, it was impossible to distinguish the fictional from the real. Skip Buller, Isidingo´s belligerent barman and the genial soapie geologist Vusi Moletsane took their chances against JCP´s ´Coffin on Wheels´.

I am lying on a blanket, squinting lazily at the leaves fluttering in the breeze. Jonas Gwangwa´s trombone is silent for a moment and he´s talking gruffly into the microphone, saying his next song is dedicated to ´all the women, the mothers, the sisters, the wives and the others´. Am I an ´other´, I wonder, after all, no one has put a ring on my finger. I pull myself up into semi-sitting position. Everywhere I look, women sit with their children, their friends and families. And here comes my man, bearing plates piled high with juicy char-grilled chicken and chops, carefully winding his way back to me across well-manicured lawns.
