Johannesburg Botanic Garden Volunteers / Public Involvement
The security issue at JBG is a number one priority and the JBG management has taken all measures within its capabilities. A security plan was drawn up and all measures to implement it are underway. One of the fundamental issues posing a threat to security is access. JBG has too many access points and they are all not controlled. If we could succeed in reducing access and have only a few points of access which are fully controlled, then we would have a situation, which we could at least control and be able to influence. Various security agencies are involved in ensuring a safer environment at JBG, including Linda Security, car guards, park wardens and JMPD and SAPS patrols. Linda Security is responsible for the overall security issues and C.J. Car Guard are responsible for the security of cars parked at the Gardens. The SAPS and park wardens do routine checks on the Gardens from time to time. Linda Security Guards are stationed at the relevant gates. They also patrol the park on a rotational basis either on foot or by bicycle. The main entrance has a chain gate which is only opened to the public who have booked the gardens for a function. The number of security guards is limited. C.J. Car Guard Car guards are stationed at the relevant parking areas. They assist the public with parking and taking care of their cars. This provides smooth traffic control and there is no congestion. The presence of car guards keeps thieves away. One other important threat to security is the piblic´s failure to adhere to JBG regulations. The garden opens at 6am and closes at 6pm. People are still found at 7pm hiding among the bushes. This poses a high risk as these people cannot be located in the dark.
