JCP VISITS 6 SCHOOLS IN WARD 15-IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MULBRY BEAR

School grounds are valuable assets and provide great potential for a variety of activities. They can be used to: create environmental awareness; further the aims of the school environmental policy; support learning programme development, and realise specific and critical outcomes in Outcomes Based Education.

To beautify school grounds special days are used to plant trees. Planting of trees, shrubs and flowers achieves many outcomes in a number of learning areas. It also increases biodiversity in school grounds and contributes to the improvement of the health and well being of learners and the school environment.

During the month of August 2003, JCP in partnership with Mulbry Bear visited 6 schools with the aim of teaching learners and educators on how to plant and care for trees.

Making use of edutainment as a means of teaching, Mulbry Bear with his well known song and dance demonstrated how to plant and care for a tree and provided some useful information on water wise gardening.

These visits were done prior to National Arbor Week to provide learners and educators the necessary knowledge and skills to enable them to take action for a better environment and plant and care for trees during and after their Arbor Day Celebrations.
