About Johannesburg City Parks

Johannesburg City Parks (JCP) is a newly formed company by the City of Johannesburg, and was incorporated under the seal of the Registrar of Companies on 15 November 2000 as a Section 21 Company. On 16 March 1999, the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Council’s Executive Committee adopted the recommendations of the then City Manager in respect of the iGoli 2002 plan for Greater Johannesburg, initiating the process to manage Johannesburg’s Cemeteries, Parks and Environmental Conservation as an Agency in future.

Mandate

The agency’s mandate is to provide the parks, cemeteries and environmental conservation services for and on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, in a more business-like approach.

Vision

Johannesburg City Parks’ vision is to be the leading African green environment and cemetery management company. The vision flows from that of the City of Johannesburg, which is to make Johannesburg an African City competitive with world class standards in every respect.

  • Highlights and Achievements 06/07

    Trees planted

    21 653 trees have been planted against the Environmental Sector Plan target of 20 000. A survival rate of 95% of trees panted has been reached. In the previous year 3 578 trees were planted.

    Jobs created

    JCP aimed to create 290 jobs and exceed its target by creating 963 jobs.

    Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) procurement

    In terms of BEE procurement, the Company exceeded both its capital expenditure as well as operating expenditure targets; the total targets of 68% were exceeded with an actual of 84%.

    External Services

    The External Services section generated revenue to the value R16M versus a target of R13, 3M.

    Capital projects

    - 99% of capital project completions were achieved.

    - 6 New developments were done in parks

    - 6 Upgrades were done in parks

    - 4 Upgrades were done in cemeteries

    Environmental education

    28, 595 beneficiaries vs. a target of 10 000 have been reached through taking environmental education to the communities.

    Extreme Park make-over

    In just 24 hours, the barren piece of land at the corner of Nick Diedericks Boulevard and Florin Road in Wilgeheuwel, Roodepoort, was transformed into a charming park, complete with a fountain.

    Zone 1 pilot project

    A pilot project to improve service quality and delivery, productivity, job creation and training, was launched. This resulted in cyclic productivity improvement of 137%. In terms of this project, 364 jobs were created.

    Theme Days Celebration

    The following theme days celebrations were held:
    National Wetlands day
    National Water week
    National Environmental week

    Launch of the Kliprivier / Klipspruit project

    The launch of the Kiprivier / Klipspruit project has taken place during the course of the year. This project is part of the Mayoral Legacy Projects.

    Customer satisfaction

    JCP has improved its customer satisfaction index by 1% from 77% in 2005/6 to 78% in 2006/7 versus a target of 70%.

    Productivity

    Productivity in terms of open space management was 95%.

    Street tree complaints

    Street tree complaints were reduced by 160 complaints from the previous year’s 9 080 to 8920, which constitutes a 1, 76% reduction.

    Visitors to the website

    Visitors to the website increased from 176 907 in the 1st quarter to 235 150 in the 4th quarter.


    Visits to shareholders

    344 Visits were paid to shareholders.

    External Services

    External Services’ income increased by 89% to R15, 3M

    Black Economic Empowerment (BEE)

    BEE increased from 80% to 84%

    Job creation

    Jobs created through EPWP increased from 727 in 2005/6 to 963 against a target of 290 in 2006/7.

    Employment Equity

    98% appointments were from PDI groups, and 44% of appointments were female, of which 80% were African.
